Electrical Engineer with a specialization in Telecommunications from Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), he received a First Prize and a Higher Degree in Electroacoustic Composition at the Royal Conservatories in Brussels and Mons. Co-founder and president of ARTeM (Art, Research, Technology and Music) and FeBeME-BeFEM (Belgian Federation for Electroacoustic Music), co-founder of the Forum des Compositeurs, he was researcher at the experimental Phonetic Laboratory at the ULB, at the Polytechnic Faculty in Mons and at the Numediart Institute. He was Professor at ESA-Arts2 and was Belgian representative of EU-COST actions DAFx and ConGAS.
He divides his time between research and creation, developing for the last 30 years the hardware and software aspects of interactive systems, with an emphasis on the management of multichannel sound spaces and the development of new methods of sound transformation with gestural control. He developed gesture-controlled virtual instruments for acousmatic music and for live electroacoustic concerts, using them for solo concerts and for improvised music, with musicians like Jean-Paul Dessy, Eric Sleichim or Stevie Wishart. But also for broader projects, most notably Margie Medlin’s Quartet project or his own eVanescens project, where cellist Sigrid Vandenbogaerde wears custom-made sensors that influence both the sound and the interactive video by Laura Colmenares Guerra.
Fascinated by the dialogue between electroacoustic music and other art forms, he also composes music for film, video, dance, theatre and sound installation. His collaboration with Belgian choreographer Michèle Noiret started in 1998 and extended through twenty dance performances to this day. He collaborated on interactive installations, videos and movies with artists and filmmakers like Marie-Jo Lafontaine, FOAM, Fred Vaillant, Mario Benjamin, Laura Colmenares Guerra, Isabelle Nouzha and Alexander Derben.
