Kevin Kailun ZHANG is a pianist, composer, and researcher working at the intersection of music, technology, and improvisation. Trained as a classical pianist from childhood, he later pursued a Bachelor of Arts at Berklee College of Music, where he deepened his knowledge of jazz, improvisation, and contemporary music practices. He is currently a PhD candidate in Artificial Intelligence at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), where his research explores fractal mathematics as a lens for understanding and generating music. As a performer, Kevin’s artistry spans both the jazz and classical traditions, while pushing beyond them through experimental approaches. His recent work involves a self-designed wrist-mounted device that modulates delay in real time, extending the piano’s sonic possibilities while retaining its acoustic intimacy. Whether in solo improvisations or in ensemble settings, Kevin seeks to bridge rigorous structure with spontaneous expression, allowing each performance to become a living dialogue between tradition, technology, and imagination.
