YANG Bowen is an acclaimed young Chinese shakuhachi performer and a leading figure in the neo-traditional Chinese music scene. A graduate of the Central Conservatory of Music with a master's degree, he studied under the renowned shakuhachi master Wang Jinde (Yamashiro). In 2021, he won first prize in the video category of the Tanabe International Shakuhachi Competition in Japan, and in 2022, he received official certification from the Yamashiro Kai.
His performances are known for their powerful stage presence and creativity, seamlessly blending classical shakuhachi techniques with diverse elements of world music. This unique approach results in a style that is deeply rooted in traditional Chinese aesthetics yet innovative and international.
He has performed in Tan Dun’s "Five Tiger Generals – The Divine Shakuhachi" and appeared on major TV shows such as 《Guoyue Dadian》(National Music Classics), 《China潮音》(China Trendy Sounds), and 《天赐的声音》(The Treasured Voice). In 2024, he toured the United States with the Dunhuang Ancient Music Ensemble, performing with the Bard Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. In 2025, he will be a guest at the World Shakuhachi Festival and serve as a judge for the World Shakuhachi Competition, solidifying his status as a representative figure in the innovation and global promotion of contemporary Chinese traditional music.
