Abstract: Creating real-time electroacoustic compositions for data-driven instruments—where the roles of composer, performer, and instrument builder intertwine—presents significant challenges and questions. These challenges include aligning technology with the desired sound, communicating data across technological boundaries, and effectively engaging with performance interfaces, each of which has its own unique characteristics and potential vulnerabilities. Notably, the challenges we encounter in musical contexts also emerge when seeking positive ways to navigate cross-cultural boundaries and interconnections. This lecture highlights that solutions applicable in the realm of data-driven instruments may also offer valuable insights for alleviating cross-cultural tensions and misunderstandings.
