Abstract: The lecture interprets the development of generative AI in the artistic field as a further step in a line of technical innovations that can be traced back to the invention of the tape recorder, or even to organ building in the Middle Ages. These technologies were initially intended to substitute existing means, but the resulting surrogates acquired their own aesthetic life and never completely replaced what already existed. This lecture examines what generative AI signifies in contemporary artistic practice and highlights current developments that are both exciting and promising.
