Annual Thematic Forum「Co-creating the Future with Electronic Music and Artificial Intelligence」

Host: XIE Bingyuan (Professor at Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, Director of the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Processing Technology for Digital Music Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and Dean of the School of Modern Digital Music Industry)

Speaker: JIN Yaochu (Academician of the European Academy of Sciences, National Distinguished Expert, Chair Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the School of Engineering, Westlake University)

Topic: AI and Art Therapy

Abstract: This talk starts with a brief review of generative AI and its application to music, video and multi-modal data generation. Following this, we summarize existing work on music therapy and explore possible benefits of integrating AI with art therapy. Finally, we discuss the potential risks in AI art therapy and techniques as well as governance regulations to handle these risks.

Speaker: Jeffery Stolet (Director of the Center for Interactivity in Music at the Future Music Institute, University of Oregon, USA, and Composer)

Topic: Algorithms — One of the Steps before Artificial Intelligence

Abstract: Developing a full-blown general artificial intelligence model for music will require much research and the arduous transfer of knowledge from humans to a technological environment. In the meantime, these are opportunities that lie in between human intuition and a general artificial intelligence for music. This short presentation will note several of such options.

Speaker: LU Xiaoxu (CEO of Xiaoxu Music, AIGC Artist, and Founder of a Well-Known Game Music Brand)

Topic: AI and Humans Create a New Era of Music

Abstract: In this talk, we will explore how musicians can cooperate with artificial intelligence to complete he whole process of music creation with the help of AI music tools. It focuses on the "audio prompt word" function provided by the current AI composing software, and combines its own creation cases to explain and share the profound and simple.

Speaker: Ken Fields (Researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Digital Artist)

Topic: Organoid Orchestra: A Globally Distributed/Networked Brain

Abstract: Sharing the insights and experiences of AI music enthusiasts represented by AIGCxChina who have been involved in AI music practices this year. From participating in AI music creation to exploring its applications in the music industry, this discussion will cover the development trends and possibilities in this field, as well as how to utilize AI technology to achieve innovation and breakthroughs in the creative process. Additionally, the discussion will look towards the future, exploring the potential of AI technology in music creation and its impact on the integration of art and technology. This will be a discussion that combines personal experiences with industry observations, aiming to inspire further thought and exchange.

Speaker: FAN Qing (Product Lead for AI Application Creation at ByteDance Volcano Engine, and Head of Commercialization for the Sponge Music Model)

Topic: The moment of putting an elephant in the refrigerator in music — A theme report on using new AI music technology to inspire user creation and enrich life

Abstract: A brief introduction to AI music generation technology, A brief analysis of domestic and overseas applications, A discussion on the new value of extremely low-threshold music creation in combination with actual user usage scenarios Looking forward to the future, industry-university-research collaboration to promote technological innovation and the development of the music industry.

Speaker: Philippe Pasquier (Artificial Intelligence Musician and Professor at the School of Interactive Arts and Technology, Simon Fraser University, Canada)

Topic: Seizing the means of production: small data and model crafting

Abstract: Be it through the augmentation of existing creative software or through embedded real-time generation, generative AI have a growing impact on creative practices. Creative AI will not take over the world, but it will certainly impact creators, students, educators, and the industry at large. In fact, in many cases, it already does. The mainstream approach to AI is the use of large models pre-trained on big data. These models are presented as generic, and omnipotent in their domain, but the reality is more nuanced. In fact, against this trend that raise ethical questions, alternative paths are being proposed. In reaction to the Big data trend, we will present a number of systems and approaches designed at the Metacreation Lab focusing on small data and model crafting. These systems aim at re-empowering users, allowing them to select and use their own datas for prompting, or to train, fine-tune and craft their own models.

Sperker: Panayiotis Kokoras (Composer, President of the International Computer Music Association, and Professor at the University of North Texas)

Topic: AI and Timbre in Music Composition: Expanding Creative Boundaries

Abstract: I will contribute to the panel by discussing AI’s impact on music composition, focusing on timbre as a core element. I will discuss my works AI Phantasy and Useless Box as examples of how AI and machine listening redefine musical expression. In AI Phantasy, I used machine learning tools like Sononym and Orchidea for analyzing vast sound libraries, enabling similarity searches and assisted orchestration that expand timbral possibilities beyond traditional boundaries. Useless Box integrates FLUCOMA, employing a Sense-Think-Act paradigm where the system listens, analyzes, and interacts in real-time with live performance, creating a dialogue between the box and its environment. These works illustrate AI’s role in expanding the emotional and perceptual dimensions of music, while also raising questions about the evolving relationship between human and machine in creative practice.
