Lecture Topic: The Art of Sound: chronos, topos, morphe
Speaker: Panayiotis Kokoras (USA)
Abstract: The perception and sensation of sound are integral to the compositional idea, the structure of the piece, and the connection it fosters between the composer, performer, and audience. Each sound may relate to others, yet it also stands as an autonomous unit, independent and unique. The musical experience transcends a linear progression, evolving into a holistic sensory phenomenon.
In this presentation, I will discuss four aspect of musical research drawing examples from my recent work.
--Sense: This project explores the construction of a tactile sound system using tactile transducers, investigating the compositional potential of such a system for a holistic listening experience.
--Hyperidiomatisism: This research focuses on the development of an ultra-thin synthetic reed for Bb clarinet, utilizing laser-cutting, 3D printing, and casting technologies. This innovative reed offers new sound possibilities and performance techniques.
--Acoustic Synthesis: A revisitation of a sound synthesis paradigm, offering further insights and refinements.
--Music Information Retrieval in Composition: This project delves into my current research on sound identification and classification, exploring its application in the compositional process.
